Did you know some lizards can drop their tail to get away from predators?
Geckos and some other types of lizards have a great ability called caudal autotomy. When a gecko feels threatened or is trying to evade a predator they will drop their tail. The tail will fall off and squirm on it’s own for a bit as a distraction while the lizard gets away, but not exactly unharmed. The tail of a gecko is an important storage unit, keeping fat and water that the lizard may need in the future. They will live to fight another day, but life without a tail will be tough.
